Athletics star Nicola Tuthill has won silver at the European Throwing Cup, setting a new personal best of 72.48m in the hammer throw.
The 22-year-old Ad Astra Elite Sport Scholar produced a standout performance to secure Ireland’s first ever senior medal at the event.
Last year, Tuthill won gold in the U-23 category, and making history becoming the first Irish athlete to do so, and claimed two U-23 silvers in the years prior.
Securing her latest medal with a personal best of 72.48m, the Cork native moves closer to Eileen O’Keeffe’s Irish senior record of 73.21m, further cementing her place among Ireland’s leading hammer throwers.

Tuthill’s success this year in Nicosia, Cyprus, is particularly notable given she was forced to withdraw from the 2022 European Throwing Cup after suffering a fractured and dislocated elbow during the U23 hammer event.
She returned though the following year and made history to become the first Irish athlete to win a medal at the competition.
A rising star in Irish field events, Tuthill made her Olympic debut in the hammer at the 2024 Paris Games.
She was named ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ for 2025 in recognition of her record-breaking contributions to Irish athletics, and was previously named Field Athlete of the Year at the 2024 National Athletics Awards, as well as University Athlete of the Year in 2023.
The European Throwing Cup brings together athletes in discus, javelin, hammer throw and shot put.
Held each March, the event was created to give throwers a high-level competition during the indoor season when many other athletes are competing at the World Indoor Championships, which is unable to host the longer throwing events.
The Ad Astra Elite Sports Scholarship programme at University College Dublin supports students who are competing and succeeding at the highest sporting levels.
